The difference between nutritionists and dieticians

“When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.”

– Ayurvedic Proverb

Health is our true wealth, as said by Mahatma Gandhi. To preserve our precious health, we must be careful of what put in our bodies! Our diet is paramount in maintaining our body’s well-being. And there are professionals such as nutritionists and dieticians that aid us in staying on the right path. The role of such professionals is crucial in designing a way to make sure that our food quotient is devoid of unnecessary fats and carbohydrates. They also help regulate our food intake to make us more active and healthy.

Though both the professions - Nutritionists and dieticians, study nutrition, diet, and food, they are quite different.

A Nutritionist is a person that offers general nutritional advice. They are not trained professionals with official certification and are not authorised to advice on serious health care problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

They are known to work with healthy individuals seeking to enhance their nutrition intake and promote healthy eating habits and a balanced and sound lifestyle.

The main focus of a nutrionist is to deal with nutritional aims and patterns.

Although there are nutrionists that have obtained advanced degrees to become a certified and regulated nutritionist.

Nutritionists are often seen in commercial settings, they are more useful in educational institutes and fitness & wellness centers. And act as a consultant in different institutions and oragnizations.

On the other hand, A Dietician is a trained professional with expertise in medical nutrition therapy. Their job is to promote nutrtional well-being and treat medical conditions. They are equipped to handle patients diagnosed with chronic diseases and prescribe dietary change in order to improve the patient’s condition. For example- they may aid a diabetic person or a obese person by formulating a suitable diet that results in refining their lifestyle.

A dietician holds certified license to act as a health expert. The feild of dieticis is medical and diagnostic, hence is a part of the medical stream.

Even though these feilds may sound similar, but are quiet distinct in their functions and equipped with diverse skills to perform diverse roles!
